At Solmates, we love the ocean like it’s family. It’s where we swim, surf, snorkel, paddle—and daydream about when we’re stuck behind our laptops. So when World Oceans Day (June 8) rolls around, we’re more than a little excited. It’s the perfect moment to reflect on how incredible our oceans are—and how we can all do a little better to protect them.
Why World Oceans Day Matters
The ocean covers more than 70% of the Earth’s surface and produces at least half of the planet’s oxygen. It’s home to most of the world’s biodiversity and provides food, jobs, and joy for billions of people around the world. But it’s under threat - from plastic pollution, overfishing, and climate change.
That’s why World Oceans Day isn’t just about admiring turtles on Instagram (although… guilty 🐢). It’s about action - big and small.
Our Ocean-Friendly Mission
Trying to fight the tsunami of plastic waste that threatens our oceans was the reason Solmates Australia was born - a way to eliminate those small single-use plastic bottles we were using to protect ourselves in the sun.
Furthermore, since launch we have been working with the legends at Plastic Bank to help stop ocean plastic in its tracks - and turn it into something good. For every Solmates sold, we fund the collection of ocean-bound plastic, keeping it out of the sea and giving it a second life. Even better? This partnership also supports local communities who collect the plastic, turning waste into real-world impact.
