Restoring forests and offsetting carbon

Restoring forests and offsetting carbon

When we started Solmates we were determined to consider the full cost to the planet of us doing business.

Not only do we try to tread as lightly as possible on the planet, we try to give back to the environment more than we take.

So looking at our carbon emissions was a major focus, with an aim to be carbon neutral right from the beginning and become carbon negative as we continue to build and grow. So to help us do this, we have partnered with not-for-profit organisation, Greenfleet, to offset our carbon emissions.

Greenfleet plants native biodiverse forests in Australia and New Zealand to capture carbon emissions and help fight the impacts of climate change. As they grow, these forests absorb carbon emissions, improve soil and water quality, and restore habitat for native wildlife, including many endangered species. Plus, the forests are legally protected for up to 100 years meaning they will be around for our children and their children to enjoy.

So when you purchase a Solmate you are contributing to the restoration of our forests. And we think that’s pretty cool.

At the moment we talk about offsetting our carbon NOT being carbon neutral or carbon negative. Why not? Well, to accurately state that we are, we need to achieve carbon neutral certification in Australia. This means we need to undertake an official greenhouse gas assessment which we will do once we are fully established and can accurately assess our carbon footprint across our operations. In the meantime, we have approximated our emissions and are working with Greenfleet to offset that entire amount and a bit more just to be safe!
